Happy Birthday To Me And This Dog!

I got another batch of old photos from Illinois last week.  Some of these are actually labeled with names and places, so I will be hunting down the families.

Until then, however, in honor of my birthday I will share these birthday photos!  I don’t know this little furbaby’s name, but the years are written on the back of the photos.

Not-So-Wordless Wednesday: Cemetery Vandalism

Vandalism in Old Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery in Henry County, Georgia.

It just makes me so angry.

Cemetery Vandalism

Cemetery Vandalism

This can be repaired, if the families and the church will step up to help.  People are standing by waiting for funding and permission to repair and clean up the cemetery.  This never should have happened in the first place.  This is a problem for the people who live around this cemetery, the families who have ancestors buried here, and for the people who raised their children to think that damage like this is ok.

Old Sharon Baptist Church Slave Cemetery, Henry County, Georgia

I had the joy of meeting with Ed, the leader of the local Boy Scout troop, and his son yesterday to tromp around the Old Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery in hopes of finding the slave cemetery that I had read was somewhere.  We found it!  Ed went and knocked on the door of the couple who right next to the cemetery.  The woman Mrs. Morgan took us out to the edge of their property where the stone wall from the cemetery runs and showed us the slave cemetery.  She said that she had marked the spot years ago with an Azalea bush, and her husband had put posts in the ground to mark where it was also.  Due to poor health they weren’t able to keep up with it as well as in the past.  She was really happy to talk to us about it and show us the stones.

Today my husband and I went out to take photos of the stones.  Mrs. Morgan and her husband came out and talked to us for a few minutes, reminding us to check for ticks when we returned home because the deer are out roaming around and she feeds them apples.

I’m excited for the find of this cemetery.  The story is that there is also a Union soldier buried there.  He apparently was killed in a battle that happened just across the street from the cemetery.

Mrs. Morgan is excited that someone is going to be cleaning it up and keeping it up.  Once it’s cleaned up I hope to make a plaque of some sort to mark the area.

My husband and I counted 25 separate areas of stones, but I guarantee there are more people because when you walk around you step into depressions in the ground.  Once the leaves are cleared away and it’s cleaned up we should be able to see other grave areas.

I will be posting photos of the Old Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery at some point.  It’s pretty horrible and I really want to get it cleaned up and the stones repaired.  Kids have been vandalizing it for years, and I can’t describe the condition it’s in accurately.  My husband and I will be going through and doing a survey of it over several days (it’s that bad).  Hopefully someone will help fund the Boy Scout troop in my area, as well as finding the descendants of the people buried in the cemetery to give the Boy Scouts permission so that the troop can go in and clean and repair all of the stones and fencing.

Anyway, photos of the stones we found in the Old Sharon Baptist Church Slave Cemetery!

Little Joseph N Edge 1873-1874

Yesterday I went with my mother over to the New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery in Locust Grove, Henry County, Georgia to help with a Find-A-Grave fulfillment.  When she finished we walked around and look at the headstones and plots.  One of the saddest, which became sadder once I got home, was the grave for little Joseph N Edge.  It appears, due to lack of headstones in the area, that he is pretty much buried by himself, with the headstone for who I assume are his parents about 16 feet or so away.  I’m not certain that there is no on else buried around him, but it looks very lonely.  Once I got home I looked him up, to see if he was on anyone’s family tree, or if I could find a reason for death.  I can find no records for him.  I can find nothing.  Not even a space on someone’s tree.

I don’t want him to be forgotten.

Joseph N EdgeThe headstone itself is wearing away, but it is still fairly readable.  The top says JOSEPH N.

Joseph N EdgeThe front of the little stone is mostly legible, with a few letters that are not.  I ran my fingers over the stone to make out the initials on the top line, but I still am not sure if the first initials are R.R., A.A., or a variation of them.  My first thought was R.R., so I will transcribe it with that, and if someone knows otherwise I hope they let me know.

A little time on earth he spent.  Till God for him His angel sent.

Joseph N EdgeThe little footstone had his initials J.N.E.

I wish I had taken a wide shot to show how lonely this little headstone is.  Nearly as lonely as this grave:

Resseau Family Cemetery

Today on the way to the lake house my husband and I stopped off at the Resseau Family Cemetery on Georgia Highway 212 in Putnam County, Georgia.  We had passed it many times but never stopped until today.  I wasn’t sure how many graves were actually in the cemetery since it is surrounded by brick wall.  When I walked up to it and climbed over the wall I discovered eight headstones, though I was wondering if there might be more graves.  It is really a nice little family plot, though I wish it were under better care.  The plot was filled with leaves and some silk flower arrangements that I suppose had once been on the graves were scattered about.

I posted the photos in chronological order according to death date.  I find it interesting that the first five died so close together.

A Few Marriages in Delaware 1759-1760

I started  putting all of the genealogy records I have into file folders this morning and was pretty disappointed that the marriage record for Ezekiel Currey and Elizabeth Brownlee is on ledger size paper, forcing me to fold the paper.  I’m not prepared to do that yet, so I will just put it back in the envelope it was delivered in and keep it that way for now.

I decided to make a list of every marriage listed on that page.  When I came to the bottom of the page I discovered that the third from the last listing is for the marriage of Samuel Nail and Margaret (written as Margrete) Brownly on August 14, 1760.  I started wondering:  could this Margaret be the sister of Elizabeth Brownlee?  Elizabeth’s first daughter was named Betsey, a nickname for Elizabeth.  Her second daughter was named Margaret.  So it’s possible she named her second daughter after a sister.  This might give me a lead to who Elizabeth Brownlee’s parents are and where they are from.  This also gives me another spelling of Brownlee to search!

I have transcribed the names on the page as well as I could.  I know that they are all listed on Family Search, but some of the names don’t look as that website transcribed them (example:  the handwriting clearly says “Buttington”, yet it is transcribed on Family Search as “Bussington”).  Names that I just couldn’t make out at all I put a note beside.  If anyone has any information on any of the parties listed below feel free to comment or contact me!  I love stories!

Leatherman, Hosley, Roake in Ohio

I know I have posted two of these photos before, but I am determined to find who they belong to since these are actually labeled and they all appear to have been in the same album at one point, prior to ending up in an antique store.  I had originally put up a post about them on GenForum.  I actually had a few of people respond with information about the first one, Cleo Leatherman, and they appear to be related to her, however they don’t seem to want the photo, nor do they seem interested in seeing the other two photos.  I really hope someone out there who is related to any of these women pictured will contact me with some information about them.  And I would love to find homes for these photographs.

Information contained in this post is collected from various websites and Ancestry trees.  If any information is incorrect please let me know!

This photo is for Cleo Fayette Mericle.  She was born September 22, 1887 in Grover Hill, Latty Township, Paulding County, Ohio to parents Isaiah Mericle (1859-1929) and Mary Catherine Gusler (1860-1949).  Cleo married Hiram Franklin (or Franklin Hiram, depending on the website you look at) Leatherman (1887-1969) in 1908 in Ohio.  Together Cleo and Hiram had at least three children: Mildred Juanita, Frances Katherine and Harold.  Cleo died on September 12, 1969 in Sylvania, Lucas County, Ohio.  Her husband died the same day, though I cannot find if he died in the same place.Cleo Fayette Mericle

Cleo Leatherman Back

The handwriting on the back of this photo is kind of hard to read.  I believe the name is Anna Hosley, though.  I looked for both Anna Hasley and Anna Hosley in the state of Ohio and both names are listed there.  The photo was taken in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.  The three women listed below are the most likely to be this mystery Anna based on birth years that I found.

Anna Eliza Topping (1874-1957) married Arthur Harrison Hosley (1870-1934)

Anna Marie Meier (1896-1984) married George William Hosley (1893-1984)

Saville Ann “Anna” Burger (1871-?) married William LC Hosley (1868-1933)Unknown Anna Hasley? Anna (Hosley, Hasley)-better image of back

The last photo is another that the handwriting is kind of hard to read, but I believe it says Augusta and Mary Roake.  Though I was unable to find a Mary Roake, I was able to find an Augusta Roake.  A marriage record for a Ruth Edna Beale lists Augusta Roake and James M Beale as parents.  If this is the correct Augusta Roake then she was born about 1870.  She had at least three children with James M Beale: Marion A (or Marian or Marion), Ruth Edna and Coleridge L.  I wish I could find Mary.

The photo was addressed to Mrs. JF Leatherman in Fort Jennings, Putnam County, Ohio.  I believe this may have been Catherine “Kate” Huston (1870-1912) who was married to Joseph Frank Leatherman (1865-?)Augusta and Mary (Roahe, Roake) Augusta and Mary (Roahe, Roake)

I hope, hope, hope someone (a direct descendant, perhaps?) will see these photos and contact me.  I would love to hear stories about these women.  More importantly I would love to see these photos go to their families.  I am not asking for any money.  The only things I ask are that: 1. the photos end up with family;  2. the photos stay with family (never end up on eBay or any other place for sale!); and 3. I can get stories and do a proper post on them so that other people who may be searching will find something!
