Feen-A-Mint 1938

This ad was found in the now defunct Woman’s World Magazine (not to be confused with the current “every woman needs to go on a diet and fix their relationship” Woman’s World Magazine").  Actually, there were several ad’s for similar products-similar in the fact that apparently women back in the day were very constipated…probably after trying recipes also found in the magazine such as “Noodle Surprise” and “Noodle Ring”.

Feen-A-Mint 1938

I looked it up and the guy that invented this laxative gum also invented an aspirin gum.  Interesting.

I wonder why it was called Feen-A-Mint?  I mean, I get the mint part, but what about the “Feen” part?

1948 Hollywood Wolf Whistle Ad

I think this might be my favorite ad so far.  It was found in an August 1948 farm magazine.  My question is:  is it a wolf whistle or a dog barking?  If it’s the latter, I wonder how many young hooligans purchased this only to find out it just sounds like a dog barking?  At least they offer a 5 day return “privilege”.

AND it’s “Built to Last!”

I would like to know how many are still out there in use…

Lux Toilet Soap 1931

What’s amusing about this ad is that, as you can see, the ad claims that Marjorie Rambeau was 37 years old in 1931 (October is the precise month of this ad).  Well, I disagree.  I’m going to say she was actually 42 years old.  According to the Social Security Death Index she was born on July 15, 1889 (died July 1970).

So of course she doesn’t mind you knowing she’s 37 years old!  Because she isn’t!

Frigidaire Electric Refrigerator 1931

Introducing the 1931 Frigidaire Electric Refrigerator!  It’s porcelain inside and out!  I wonder how heavy it was?

Frigidaire 1931

The porcelain is lifetime, but the refrigerator is only guaranteed for three years…

I would like to have one of these in my kitchen!

Hill’s Horse Meat and a Mystery Photograph

Here’s a random ad I found for Hill’s Horse Meat.  I don’t know how old this particular ad is, but I am guessing 1940s.

Hill's Horse Meat Ad

Not only is it healthful, it’s also nourishing!  Not only is it economical, but it is also high in value!  And if that doesn’t persuade you to buy it you should also know it’s easy to use!  It doesn’t say that your dog will love it, though.

Now for the mystery photograph.  Amongst the belongings of my stepfather, Edward Kenneth Albrecht (1949-2004), was this photograph.

Mystery Ansley Hotel, Atlanta Photograph

The moment was captured at the Ansley Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia.  The photograph was tucked inside of this sleeve:

The back of the sleeve:

We know the picture was taken sometime after 1953.  According to the Atlanta History Center the Ansley Hotel was sold to the Dinkler hotel in 1953 and the name of the hotel was eventually changed to Dinkler Plaza Hotel.

Do you know who these people are?  My mom is guessing one of them is Ed’s mother, Eunice Mozelle Matthews, but she isn’t certain.

Durkee’s Vegetable Oleomargarine Ad 1948

Durkee's Margarine 1948

Oh, where to begin?  This ad for Durkee’s Vegetable Oleomargarine was found in the February 29, 1948 issue of the now defunct This Week Magazine.  This Week Magazine was distributed along with the Sunday paper back in the day.

Now I don’t know about you, but I think that spinach ring looks pretty unappetizing.  But that isn’t even the most bothersome thing about this ad.  I think the fact that in the bottom left-hand corner, if you look really closely, you can see that Durkee’s was, at the time, “A Division of The Glidden Co.”.  That’s right, those fine people that are intent on helping you repaint your house used to make food products.  Oleo food products.

Durkee is still around, making spices and marinades.  You have to wonder if they look back on this recipe and cringe.

I wonder if anyone ever actually made this recipe and served it to their family?  I’m ok with it, if you take out the shrimp and the cream sauce…
